I’m out of Magenta ink, might as well buy a new printer.

I’ve been out of Magenta ink in my Canon printer for almost a year. When I need to print something I can trick the printer into successfully spitting out one B&W page at a time before the error message appears. It’s a game of clicks but it’s worked for countless letters and invoices.

Even though I’ve printed only black text, last week I got a new warning; the ‘Photo’ Magenta is empty too! I succumb to the necessity of purchasing ink.

Today I stopped by Circuit City on the way home. The Canon BCI-6 multipack was $62.99 – not doin’ it. They were out of Magenta singles so I left for the Walmart a few blocks away.

Walmart didn’t stock the BCI6 ink cartridges. After considering my options, I bought the Canon Pixma IP2600SE for $29.88. Yeah, that’s right, I bought a new printer for less than $30 instead of paying $13 x 6.

During the process I called my friend and we joked about the 1/4 full cartridges that come with new printers and how a new printer could be made, transported, stocked and sold for $29 but a little squirt of ink will cost you.

While on the phone he checked the Free section on Craig’s List and found a ” brand new color scanner/copier/printer” about 6 miles away. The ad even specifies new ink cartridges included. A better one for free only a few miles drive, hmm…

Anyway, considering this $30 printer came with full ink tanks, will I ever buy ink again or will I just be buying a new printer every few months?
